Queen - Brian May Disappointed By John Deacon's Movie Snub

Brian May

Queen guitarist Brian May is disappointed the band's former bassist John Deacon will not be involved in the forthcoming Freddie Mercury biopic.

Deacon features on all of the group's 15 albums but has refused to appear alongside remaining bandmates May and Roger Taylor since 1997, missing out on their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and their performance at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The retired bassist has read and approved the script for the film, which is based on Mercury's life and stars Ben Whishaw as the tragic frontman, but he does not want to be involved in the project.

May tells Rolling Stone, "John doesn't want to be (involved). He's in his own space and we respect that. It's a shame, because we would love to have him around but he doesn't want to be in that arena anymore... he just doesn't want to be walking those roads.

"We kinda (sic) mourn for John as well as Freddie in a sense because there ain't nobody quite like John on those four strings. He's an amazing player and it was just the companionship, as part of the group. Hopefully you'll see that in the film - the relationships we've had were very strong. I do know John's read the script and he's in approval."

Queen rocker Brian May has another reason to smile after learning he's free of prostate cancer - he has discovered a lost song recorded by his late pal and bandmate Freddie Mercury.

The guitarist alerted fans to the news of his find on his blog shortly after revealing his winter health crisis was over and doctors had ruled out cancer as the cause for abnormalities they found while treating him for torn spinal discs last year (13).

He wrote, "Some Queen magic is happening... I feel it in my bones. It's annoying to have to be so secretive, but I guess I have to, for now. What I can say is the track we dusted off today has the four of us, Freddie, John (Deacon), Roger (Taylor) and myself, playing together on a track we'd forgotten about that was never finished.

"It sounds so fresh... now all carefully transferred into the ProTools (computer) environment but sounding exactly like it did straight off the 24-track tape it was recorded on over 30 years ago. I got quite emotional hearing some of it... It's crying out to be finally brought into the world."

The film, which is being scripted by Peter Morgan (“The Queen”), has gone through quite a long casting development. Sacha Baron Cohen was originally announced to play the role of Mercury back in 2010, but dropped out in July due to creative differences. Although Whishaw’s casting has never been officially announced, he’s been attached to the project ever since he was revealed in an interview with BBC’s “The One Show” to be the band members’ choice to play the part. As for the casting of the other band members, Robert Pattinson’s name has previously been brought up for the role of May.

Flynn’s star is on the rise this year. In between working with his band, the Sussex Witt, he played opposite Anne Hathaway in Kate Barker-Froyland’s music drama “Song One” (which debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival) and Chloe Moretz in Olivier Assaya’s “Clouds of Sils Maria “ – both of which are likely to be released this year.
